Residential rainwater collection systems should be simple, understandable, and the pieces and parts should be accessible. There are many rainwater harvesting resources available, but its important to keep mind that rainwater harvesting is not complicated. Rainwater harvesting can be designed to be frost-free, low maintenance, and enhance the thermal performance of your deep green home.
This example utilizes a conventional gutter and downspout to gravity drain to an off-the-shelf basket strainer accessory available for commonplace 16″ diameter plastic tanks approved for potable water storage. Replaceable, cleanable, layers of non-woven filter fabric can be added to the strainer basket. Of course, you will want to install filter technology appropriate for the intended end-use. Economical plastic storage tanks come in many sizes. Linking a series of tanks enables a storage system to b expandable and adaptable to the specific household needs. This design stores over 6000 gallons, and the inlet tank (the tank that will accumulate sediment over time) is configured with a shut-off valve and quick disconnect for periodic cleaning.
